Do not tell me speaking out is futile!
Whenever I (or someone I know) speaks up about a problem in the church, an inequity that should be resolved, an issue that needs to be addressed, someone, somewhere pipes up with one of the following:
- You are displaying apostasy by refusing to support the brethren.
- If you make it an issue, the church leaders will refuse to act just to prove they don't bow to public pressure.
Maybe not.
In an article just published a few minutes ago by Peggy Fletcher Stack, she claims that a woman will be praying in a general session of April's General Conference. I've been talking about this forever. I couldn't be happier!
On her Facebook post linking to her article, she writes, “Dear FB friends, My sources for this story are solid. Trust me. I am a professional journalist. I do not go into print with rumors.”
Peggy is a solid writer. I trust her back.
Alison Moore Smith is a 61-year-old entrepreneur who graduated from BYU in 1987. She has been (very happily) married to Samuel M. Smith for 40 years. They are parents of six incredible children and grandparents to two astounding grandsons. She is the author of The 7 Success Habits of Homeschoolers.
A bit of progress on the home front!
Extremely pleased to hear this. And I trust Peggy too. 🙂
I remember being a kid when they announced from our pulpit that women would start saying the prayers in Sacrament Meeting.
Ellen, to your point, when I first heard that I was shocked that at some point in my lifetime women were not allowed to pray in Sacrament meeting! I don’t remember the announcement but I was quite young then. And while I have never lived in a ward that didn’t allow women to give opening prayers in Sacrament meeting, it’s well documented that the practice still happens.
This feels like such a baby step and it’s actually kind of embarrassing to admit to my nonmember friends that this hasn’t happened until now, and yet I am very excited about it. Not even so much just the praying, but just that it indicates to me that maybe our leaders are listening a little more than we perhaps thought we were. I hope this will lead to other changes as well.
Finally!!!!!!! (Yes, Angie, I’m embarrassed too!)
this is very good news a long time coming. institutions tend to change slowly but we are seeing change. to be really honest i am surprised at any changes under monson because hes kind of an old school guy.
