If you've read here for long, you know that our family spent a decade in Boca Raton, Florida. And while I wouldn't want to move back permanently, it's a great place to visit…especially during the winter. If you ever feel chilled to the bone, snowed in, and longing for sun, Florida in February is the place to be!

Jupiter, Florida, USA inlet and light house.

Why February? Because the weather is mild and the crowds sparse. No matter where you go (even Walt Disney World), relaxation is at the optimum. Lines are shorter and humidity is down. And hurricanes are nonexistent.

A Florida getaway not in the budget? Enter the Florida's 500 Years of Adventure Sweepstakes for a chance to win! This sweepstakes was created to celebrate 500 years since Ponce de Leon first explored Florida in 1513. (If you get a chance, visit the oldest city in the United States, Saint Augustine. It was founded in 1565! Lovely city!) I entered even though I never win anything. Seriously. It will take you about 12 seconds to complete your entry. But an subtropical getaway is worth the effort.

My favorite upcoming prize avaiable is the Casual Island Style prize. It's on Captiva Island off Florida's Gulf Coast (or, as we locals called it, the “west coast”). The resort has 13 lush tropical acres and miles of sugar-sand beaches (and if you like shells, you've never seen shells like these!). This is the mid-winter getaway to banish the blues and revive your soul! The prize includes:

  • round-trip airfare
  • six-day care rental from Hertz
  • five nights' accommodations at ‘Tween Waters Inn Island Resort
  • daily continental breafast buffet
  • $100 dining credit

If you want to keep updated on the weekly prize being offered, follow @VISITFLORIDA on Twitter. The contest lasts through the end of 2013, with weekly prizes, so you have many chances to win.
