You know I love holidays. Every one is an excuse to celebrate with traditions and family fun. But St. Patrick's Day is near and dear to me ever-lovin' ginger-headed heart.
Not awash in Irish culture? No problem. It's easy to make St. Patrick's Day memorable. Here are some ideas:
- Wear green. I know, I know, it's not an authentic tradition, but do it anyway. Or you'll be sorry…all day long.
- Tape green paper shamrocks all over your windows.
- Play Celtic music all day long.
- Get on your ghillies and dance—especially jigs and Irish step (I took classes from Rinceoiri Don Spraoi (rin-cory don spree), starting when I was 36. You're never too old to dance!)
- Eat St. Patrick's Day themed foods:
- Green, heart-shaped waffles or pancakes arranged to look like a shamrock for breakfast
- Green eggs and ham for lunch
- Corned beef and cabbage for dinner
- St. Patrick's Day milkshakes for dessert
- Get a claddagh ring. Wear it.
- Watch Far & Away.
See? It just takes a few simple steps to infuse your day with Irishness. You'll be better off for it!
May the luck o' the Irish be with you. My the wind be always at your back. Wishing you a rainbow. Shamrocks in your doorway. May love and laughter light your days, and warm your heart and home. And all the rest.
Happy St. Patrick's Day!

When I saw this it was too late for corned beef, but I did download some Celtic music (I didn’t know Amazon did downloads) and rented a copy of Far and Away. So never saw that movie and now my wife thinks I’m super romantic. Hey.
Cory, I’m so happy to share my favorite movie with the world. Totally romantic. And our favorite line is, “You came back from the dead to tell me that I’m odd?” 😀
I am living in england and I am irish , I totally forgot about St Patricks day, such a shame. 🙁 🙁
john! Take the shame! Fortunately there’s always next year to get your Irish on in style. 🙂
P.S. I lived in Leeds when I was 19. My dad was on sabbatical from BYU and did math research at the university there. Fond memories of life across the pond!
I should have played Celtic music at work. I didn’t even think about it.
These are some great ideas. St. Patrick’s Day is such a lighthearted holiday that it is fun to celebrate, but not many people really do have traditions for it, as they do for other holidays.
