Roll-over goals. I've talked about them…and about how I don't want them to be part of my life. Alas, some of them are—again—this year. Of my eight main-level goals for 2011, I completed six. Here are the goals I accomplished:
- Create educational schedules for January–June. (And June–December, I might add.)
- Plan Jessica's wedding. (As if I could have stopped the wedding by refusing to plan.)
- Enter all data and year end adjustments for business accounts.
- Buy furniture for main rooms in the house.
- Plan Primary music lessons a week ahead. (At least most some of the time.)
- I had planned to complete a PHP course “for fun” (I know, I'm amused by odd things), but changed my mind. Instead we made a list of family summer activities and worked through as many as we could.
I'm not disgusted with myself, but 75% is a solid C grade. Not what I'm going for.
To be fair, I did complete a number of goals that weren't listed, including some gargantuan ones…like move my dad in with us, clean out the house I grew up in and he lived in for 43 years almost single-handedly, and sell his house. None of those were on the agenda when 2011 began, and we have to be ready (and willing) to deal with unexpected life circumstances. But I'd still like to get better at identifying the things that are most important to me and not getting sidetracked by other good—but less important—things.
We do what we really want to do. Our life is a testament to what we really, truly, deeply value. If you spend 52 hours watching reality TV (one 1-hour show per week), then watching reality TV is more important—to you—than anything else you could do with those 52 hours. Your choices prove that.
Think about that opportunity cost next time you decide to turn on the TV…or do anything else with your precious time.
Without further ado, below are my starting line goals for 2012 in each of the eight areas of focus. Let this be the year of 100% completion!
Please share some of your own goals and tell us how you'll accomplish them!

One of my goals is to clean out the basement. I hope to get it done by the end of the month. This might not sound like much, but if you saw my basement, you would know it’s very ambitious!
I love seeing this spelled out. The way you have written your goals seems like something I could actually do. Thanks.
LOVE this! =) Thanks for sharing!
I sat down yesterday and worked on my own 2012 goals. I too am wanting to lose weight (about 20-25 pounds). I put on the “newlywed nineteen” (as I like to call it) within a year after my husband and I got married. I’ve spent the past two years since then wanting to shed it and trying here and there, but I always end up side-tracked and back at square one. Any tips/ideas/suggestions you come across, please feel free to share!
I love that the goals you have are very specific and measurable. I think that so much increases the chance of success. I plan to try to cut monthly household spending by 10%.
Here’s a good one i fund on FB yesterday “My new year resolution is 1280×800 pixels.” 🙂 🙂
I really liked this one, last yuear i had taken a resolution to quit smoking and by the month of April i ‘kicked the butt’ fully. This year i dont plan to have a resolution as i think what i wanted to achieve, i have achieved and i am happy that i am doing well by staying away from ciggy. Success & failures will come and go, so i am happy with out one this year!
I dont have any new years resolution..I want only to lose weight..
I have decided not to make any New Year resolutions this year and live as it is. Every new day will bring me some new resolutions and I will make decision on the spur of the moment.
Someone sent me a message asking why going to be by 11:00 was “for love.” I am a night person and have been since I was a baby. (No hyperbole there, people.) But my husband is a morning person, through and through. I’m trying — again — to have a sleep schedule more in line with the real world because he would really love it. 🙂
Everyone has their new year plans but i guess it should be special for 2012. I guess you aren’t prepared for 2012 doomsday 🙂
