My name is Tracy, and I am very pleased to have been invited to participate in the Mormon Momma blog. I am 42 years old and have been a member of the Church since I was a 19-year-old college sophomore. I have been married to my eternal companion for 18 years, and we have two wonderful children, a 6-year-old daughter whom I refer to on the Internet as Grasshopper (a Kung Fu reference if you are old enough to remember that show), and a 3-year-old son whom I refer to here as Cricket (smaller than a Grasshopper, but a lot louder). We are so blessed to presently be able to homeschool our children.
In my former life, as I call it (that is, before kids), I was heavily involved in family history research and enjoyed crochet and needlework in my spare time. Professionally, I worked in rehabilitation services managing a sheltered workshop program for disabled adults. I left that field for a career in law and obtained my law degree just before having my first child. When people meet me for the first time, what stands out to them perhaps the most is that I am much older that they expect…not because I look young (how I wish that were so!), but because my children are so young. (After all, most mothers my age are planning high school graduations and missions, and my younger sister is expecting her second grandchild.) Throughout our marriage, we have determined to leave the question of children fully to the Lord, and we were married for 12 years before we had a child…a story that I will save for another post.
In my ward, I am currently the Gospel Essentials Teacher. It is a very nice calling for this stage in my life. I only have to teach a class each week, and there are no other obligations, except that I might attend an occasional baptism. I can take as long as I want to teach a particular lesson, as I do no have to keep up with an imposed schedule. My husband is the High Priest Group Leader, so an uncomplicated calling is all the better considering his responsibilities.
So there you have it: my life in a nutshell. I look forward to participating in Mormon Momma and getting to know you.
Alison Moore Smith is a 61-year-old entrepreneur who graduated from BYU in 1987. She has been (very happily) married to Samuel M. Smith for 40 years. They are parents of six incredible children and grandparents to two astounding grandsons. She is the author of The 7 Success Habits of Homeschoolers.
I am 41 years old. I have a 7 year old girl and a 3 year old son (I also have an 11 year old boy and a 13 year old girl). Can’t even imagine kids in college.
Tracy, welcome welcome welcome. We are so glad to have you! 🙂 Two notes:
(1) Can’t wait to hear you baby story. As an adoptee, I enjoy such stories.
(2) Funny, I also assumed you were late 20s–early 30s. heh heh But we old women are still welcome here. 🙂
Welcome Tracy! Nice to have you here!
Tracy,
We almost named our daughter Cricket. Not as a nickname!
Glad to have you here.
Gina
I too, am 42 with little ones running around, ages 8 & 6. I look forward to hearing you share and learning more!
For the record, my “baby” is seven. When some of my (47-year-old) peers are empty nesters, I’m still in early elementary school. 🙂 But I also have a married daughter in graduate school. Go old moms!
Welcome to the MM family! Glad to have you aboard!
— As a side note– we may need to make some sort of distinguishing name or something besides just saying “Tracy” to keep our identities seperate, or everytime someone types Tracy, I’m going to wonder if they’re speaking to or of me. Even I was taken aback a little reading the first couple lines of your intro– I’m 42, too!
Tracy K and Tracy P?
I noticed that, too. Tracy P. is fine for me. 🙂
Crud— my daughter was reading over my shoulder and reminded me that I’m NOT 42. I turned 43 this summer.
For Pete’s sake, I don’t even know how old I am. Calgon take me away!
ROFL!!!!! I do that all. the. time! You’re not alone.
I would say that you are only as old as you feel, but then I would be about 60yo.
Hah!
