Having purchased our first Macs in 1985—just days after returning form our honeymoon—we have been Apple fans for a quarter of a century. As you might guess, that means we are an iPhone family as well. The only thing I don't love about my iPhone is that the available service providers are limited. When they were first released, only AT&T was available…and we were locked into a year-long contract. Now, you can also get Verizon on iPhones. Rumor has it that Sprint and T-Mobile are on the way, but it's been a long time coming, suffering with a less-than-preferred provider.

If you aren't attached to a particular technology, comparing cell phone plans and choosing a better service can save you oodles of cash. And if you have multiple family members with phones (right now we have seven), those monthly payments can explode.

Today I learned about a new cell phone available from Walmart. It's called Straight Talk.

Some of the features I find most attractive are:

  • No contract – you just pay month to month
  • Great prices on plans – unlimited monthly service is only $45, and includes calls, text, picture messaging, and web, they have a plan to give you everything you need
  • No credit check. We have great credit, but I still don't like people delving into my financial business and, more to the point, posting a credit check to my credit report.
  • Great prices on plans
  • Good selection of trusted phone manufacturers, including smart phones and even reconditioned phones ($10 for a phone for your kids (with camera, MP3, web, bluetooth)? Yes!)
  • No activation, reactivation, termination fees—cancel when you want, start back up any time
  • No charge for 411 calls
  • Flexible, prepaid international calling so you can call a friend just about anywhere in the world for a low rate

Check into Straight Tali. They may just win you over, hook, line and sinker.
