Having purchased our first Macs in 1985—just days after returning form our honeymoon—we have been Apple fans for a quarter of a century. As you might guess, that means we are an iPhone family as well. The only thing I don't love about my iPhone is that the available service providers are limited. When they were first released, only AT&T was available…and we were locked into a year-long contract. Now, you can also get Verizon on iPhones. Rumor has it that Sprint and T-Mobile are on the way, but it's been a long time coming, suffering with a less-than-preferred provider.
If you aren't attached to a particular technology, comparing cell phone plans and choosing a better service can save you oodles of cash. And if you have multiple family members with phones (right now we have seven), those monthly payments can explode.
Today I learned about a new cell phone available from Walmart. It's called Straight Talk.
Some of the features I find most attractive are:
- No contract – you just pay month to month
- Great prices on plans – unlimited monthly service is only $45, and includes calls, text, picture messaging, and web, they have a plan to give you everything you need
- No credit check. We have great credit, but I still don't like people delving into my financial business and, more to the point, posting a credit check to my credit report.
- Great prices on plans
- Good selection of trusted phone manufacturers, including smart phones and even reconditioned phones ($10 for a phone for your kids (with camera, MP3, web, bluetooth)? Yes!)
- No activation, reactivation, termination fees—cancel when you want, start back up any time
- No charge for 411 calls
- Flexible, prepaid international calling so you can call a friend just about anywhere in the world for a low rate
Check into Straight Tali. They may just win you over, hook, line and sinker.

We are looking for new cell phones, but I didn’t want to change because you have to start a whole new contract. This might work for us because it doesn’t have a contract. Thanks for the info.
I can say that in my area I can’t not even follow all the mobile plan that our mobile companies offer as there are plenty of them in fact. I have chosen the one which is nice to use in the country only as the international calls is still a fortune.
I heard that the T-Mobile / AT&T merger is scheduled to happen next year, and the joining of the 2 networks should help improve AT&T’s coverage tremendously (to anyone considering the company for future service)…
That would be helpful, wouldn’t it? I love my iPhone, but I’m NOT loving AT&T.
The Android and iOS versions of Bing for Mobile have been treated to a major update nowadays. The application will also be coming to Windows Phone devices in the near future, as well as on BlackBerry.
