When my dad's car was run over by a semi-truck last February, he was at the top of Spanish Fork canyon. When the nurse called me, he was in the Mountain View Hospital, in Payson, Utah, nearly 30 miles away.
I grabbed my stuff and headed to Payson to rescue dad. Hospital runs are not the best rides of the day. When I finally got there, it was such a sad sight. There was my dad, in a hospital gown, sitting in a wheelchair (better than a bed!). He looked so frail and white as a sheet.
With broken ribs, a terribly injured hip, and lots of bumps and bruises, the doctor only agreed to release him if he had 24 hour care. Since we'd built the house with the idea of him moving in, bringing him right home was no problem at all. When we left the hospital, I looked for a place—in this unfamiliar city—to fill his prescriptions as soon as possible. Near the hospital was a Walgreens, so I pulled in. While I was waiting for the prescription to be filled, I looked around for some other supplies I'd need to take care of him:
- Meal-replacement drinks
- Pain killer
- Antibiotic ointment
- Bandages
My dad is a brand name buyer and, frugal as he is, rarely purchases generics. But since I love savings, I'm always on the lookout for a good deal. Almost every single product I needed was available in from among the Walgreens Brand Health & Wellness Products.
I hadn't tried any of the Walgreens brand products, but have generally found store brands to be every bit as good as name brands. The ingredients are the same as store brands. (I'm always surprised that some people still don't know this.) The savings are substantial—and they have a 100% money back guarantee (and I'm not afraid to use it!)—so I took them home.
Due to arthritis and other age-related aches and pains, my dad has been a longtime user of Tylenol PM. When he saw the Extra Strength PM Pain Reliever Geltabs, he was a bit skeptical. But within only two days, he was off the prescription meds and using only the Walgreens pain reliever. He's a store brand convert!

I live in a small town, but we do have a Walgreens. I’ve used coupons there to really save a lot. I’m a fan.
I didn’t even know Walgreens had a store brand. I wonder how these smaller companies are doing when huge chains have pharmacy plus other stuff? Lots of competition.
The only reason why the name brand items are more expensive is because they have to go through branding process. I like to purchase the generic brands as well because if you look at the active ingredients, they’re identical. Good luck with your father’s recovery!
