One of our main goals with our custom home was to build a home that required minimum maintenance. Because roofs are a major expense—and a worn roof can cause extensive damage—we researched roofing alternatives extensively.
We looked at magnum boards, metal roofs, and other less common surfaces. When comparing the pros and cons of each (such as the fact that only the color is under warranty on metal roofs), we ended up choosing a standard shingle installation.
We choose the Tamko Heritage 50 laminated asphalt shingle in Rustic Cedar (from the Classic Heritage Colors collection). We wanted a roof that was a bit lighter, both for aesthetics and to reflect more sunlight. These shingles come with a lifetime limited warranty and a 10-year limited warranty for against wind damage up to 90 miles per hour. Given that I am now ancient, this should take care of us.
The roofing crew is now about halfway through the installation. It looks great!

It sounds like you did your research, and know the importance of a quality roof system. You are a smart person, taking the time to research, before investing in a long term asset such as a roof. It looks great, you made a good choice.
Hmmm. Looks like they did pretty good; tarpaper overlapped, drip edge on the rake, nailing in the proper diagonal pattern. Very nice! TAMKO 50s, nice and thick!
This minimizes heat gain during the day, which has the potential to reduce energy costs in
your home. Their roofing systems are designed to repel water and withstand
windy weather. If you do find yourself with a serious problem, it’s probably best to let an
experienced engineer take a look.
