According to the US Census Bureau's Survey of Market Absorption of Apartments (leave it to the feds to complicate every possible title to make it nearly impossible to understand), the median rental price for an unfurnished rental apartment in the US (as of 2008) was $1,091. The northeast and west have the highest rates, followed by the south. The Midwest has the lowest rental rates of all. (I can think of no legitimate reason why taxpayer money is used to collect this data—which also includes gems such as the fact that 60% of all unfurnished rentals are in the south—but there is it.)
