The day started off with a bang. My daughter, Belinda—who has been working with me on the program so far—got up at 6:00 am. We grabbed our shake and went for a run. Yes, we did the optional workout even on a holiday.

Then we got ready to go to the parade and other festivities. We grabbed a quick “second breakfast” and ran out the door with our snack and rice bowl packed to go.

Considering the fact that everyone else was eating all manner of snackage, I was proud that we stuck to our plan.

The annual barbecue was a little less inspiring, however. We varied considerably from the plan. But considering that we did much better than usual, I would still call it forward movement.

While others ate sirloin burgers and polish dogs, we ate quarter-pound hamburgers made with the following:

  • 96/4 extra lean ground beef
  • one slice 2% cheese
  • whole wheat bun
  • fat free mayo
  • mustard
  • alfalfa sprouts
  • tomato
  • onion

We passed up the potato salad and had some watermelon chunks and a cob of corn. For dessert we he had a trifle-like dish made with:

  • sugar-free angel food cake
  • sugar-free cherry jello
  • strawberries
  • blueberries
  • sugar free whipped topping

This was definitely a divergent path, but not too bad considering the circumstances.

On Sunday, we'll be happy not to exercise, but we will face an extended family dinner. I think I'll take a variation of the Kristi's salad and fill up on that. Wish us luck.
