Innocence of Muslims, Terrorism, Islam, Americans

I just sat through the complete 13:02 misery of an anti-Islam movie, Innocence of Muslims, that mocks the Islamic prophet Muhammed and is supposedly “igniting” massive protests, uprisings, rioting, and murder around the Muslim world. I noticed a few things:

  1. This “film” is lower quality than my 25-year-old home movies. It's painful.
  2. There are many obvious voiceovers every time any Islamic reference occurs.
  3. Some of the “actors” (using the term so loosely as to offend anyone who's ever been in a neighborhood road show), have decried the “film” as it stands. But they didn't seem to be bothered when they made the movie, which without dubbing seems to have been demeaning to other religions.
  4. As a Mormon, I think we have more offensive things thrown at us every single day in chat rooms, on message boards, on blogs, over the pulpit, on news sites, and even in the so-called “mainstream media” than this insipid, asinine, nonsensical mini hack job. (Seriously, can you even tell me the plot?)
  5. How many of the so-called “film protestors” actually saw this movie? Was it translated into their own language?
  6. If you're really so mad, so out of control, so violent after seeing this “movie” (or hearing about it from your neighbor's brother-in-law) that you have to kill someone, why would you first think to kill someone obviously and completely unrelated to those responsible and on an entirely different continent?
  7. The White House urging YouTube to “review” the video for appropriateness, supposedly to appease terrorist activity, is nauseating. Of course it's a disgusting movie. Or at least stupid. But there are tens of thousands of offensive movies offered on YouTube and in theaters every day. And the only time offensive content is a matter federal interest is when it's about Muslims or Sandra Fluke and her birth control carnival act.
  8. The idea that this piece of amateurish mockery is worth all this outrage, all this destruction, all these threats, and death, is beyond comprehension. The attacks are not about the movie.
  9. If Secretary Clinton and President Obama are correct—and we really, truly need to fudge the first amendment and grovel about how sorry we are for hurt feelings that “make” extremists kill other people—maybe we can stop pretending that we're dealing with peaceful, rational people who will respond with love and cooperation if we just sit down for tea and crumpets with them often enough.

Let's take a moment of silence to ponder sanity.

Update: Just found a great article on the topic: “Mrs. Clinton, Mr. Obama, it's time to wake up and smell the global jihad
