On April 22, 2009, President Obama travelled to Newton, Iowa, to give his earth day speech. In doing so, he burned up 9,000 gallons of fossil fuels.
Al Gore lives in a 20-room, eight-bathroom mansion in the posh Belle Meade area of Nashville. It consumes 20 times the electricity of the average American household. He uses private jet transportation to reach his speaking engagements about “global warming.” In his defense, he buys carbon offsets and encourages others jetting around the country to do the same—from his own company.
Utah Governor John Huntsman is going—with a contingency of others from the Western Governors' Association—to a green energy summit and fireside chit chat…in China. Then, in June, the same Chinese officials will visit Park City, Utah, for the Energy Summit Redux.
Last night I wracked my brain for a solution to the troubling dilemma encountered by those who are too important to stay put. After hours of intense research, I found it:
Conference Call
Alison Moore Smith is a 61-year-old entrepreneur who graduated from BYU in 1987. She has been (very happily) married to Samuel M. Smith for 40 years. They are parents of six incredible children and grandparents to two astounding grandsons. She is the author of The 7 Success Habits of Homeschoolers.
:rolling: :rolling: :rolling:
Common sense goes a long way…
Ha! That was great Alison!
You can even do video conferencing now so it would be almost like being in the same room.
Now let’s discuss the absolute idiocy and hypocrisy of buying carbon offsets. Let me give you the real definition of “carbon credits.” It means, “I’m rich enough to continue my frivolous, wasteful, extravagant, eco-harmful lifestyle–while still claiming with a straight face that I’m a tried and true environmentalist.
I’m hearing that Germany is having a real struggle keeping up with fuel needs while complying with the Kyoto Treaty. So, they are buying carbon credits from third world countries. Third world countries don’t have the limitations everyone who signed the treaty has. The whole thing is so ridiculously stupid.
I’m totally convinced that all this “global warming” warning on the part of Gore is NOTHING but a get rich quick scheme for him.
You can tell the ones who REALLY are concerned about it by how they LIVE. Isn’t that true about everything?
Wow. And they call Mormons cultists?
Of course if you want to find hypocrisy, it can be found anywhere. A current Sunday school lesson is about the Sabbath Day, and we are counseled not to work nor travel on Sunday.
But recently we had a general authority visiting for stake conference who forced us to all meet at once in the morning, while typically there are two sessions in towns an hour apart (one morning, one afternoon). This meant that overall attendance was lower, since some people didn’t have the ability to make the trip. But this guy had to fly home that afternoon. It didn’t bother me.
Environmentalists don’t worship Gore any more than Mormons worship Joseph Smith. If you really want to talk about this, use words that allow a conversation.
I watched the Wow clip. Those people are nuts! I also believe in stewardship over the earth and treating it with care and love, but seriously, screaming and crying over a tree like you are mourning a dead relative you were extraordinarily close to? Whoa! The last time I freaked out even remotly close to that was when both my
little guys decided to go on walk about and took off. I don’t think wailing and gnashing of teeth is going to help the trees. Educating and teaching is what is going to precipitate change. acting the crazy person will only get you laughed at on the Internet.
Alison, I’m a huge “tree” fan. I LOVE trees. A guy a dated used started calling me “Charley” because I was constantly commenting on the beauty of a particular tree as we drove or walked by, the crazy shape of another, the height, color of leaves– whatever. At the time, I hadn’t read the book. So when he first called me Charley I didn’t get it and he had to explain it. One of the things that I loved about house when we were house-hunting was the big Oak in the front yard. But that video is one of THE strangest things I’ve seen in a long time. I realize that things WE do would seem “strange” to those who haven’t seen it before or don’t understand it, but there’s a line of “common sense” that once crossed, makes that “something different” or “strange” seem over-the-top and more like a big show for a sense of personal importance and getting attention, glory and admiration, even if only from other followers. Case in point– does it not occur to these people who are so zealousy concerned about the life of the trees and nature, that they’re “trampling” insects and just sprouting BABY TREES to death as they walk through the woods? That they’re leaving traces of their human diseases and pathogens behind? Does it occur to them that all the SCREAMING is probably very disturbing to all the birds, squirrels and other creatures who are used to the quiet serenity of a forest glade?
But setting the seeming ‘whackiness’ of the over the top “mourning” for a dead tree aside, what really gets under my skin about such zealousness for the life of a tree is that GENERALLY, though not always of course, these are the same people who are staunch supporters of abortion.
The one lady said “Bring me to this rock that has the most incredible life”…. yes, a ROCK. It’s possible of course that she was referring to all the rolly-pollys and worms underneath it– or the ants and mites that were crawling across the top of it, maybe there’s nice patch of moss on it. But still– she’ll freak out, cry and SCREAM in mourning over the loss of a TREE, but I’ll bet most of those people don’t shed ONE TEAR over a HUMAN BABY being literally ripped apart into pieces inside the womb, nor do they shed ONE TEAR for the HUMAN BABY who’s murdered by a doctor who shoves a pair of scissors into it’s skull and sucks out the brain JUST before it’s head is all the way of the birth canal and can take it’s first breath.

With all due respect Naismith, I think plenty of conversation is allowed!
I am dismayed, however, that you would say our church leaders are hypocritical for attending meetings with the saints and requesting members to come to meet with them.
I have read this site since it’s inception and, so, have probably read all of your posts. While I see that you were trying to make a point, it falls flat in the sense that in all of our gospel “rules and regulations” there is always an important element of context. I’m sure you know that the counsel to avoid travel isn’t the same as Jewish law which has some randomly selected number of steps that can be taken. It is simply not to make the Sabbath of day of driving and vacationing. But since you know that, using that as an example of supposed hypocrisy is nonsensical.
While I do believe we are to be good stewards of this beautiful, wondrous earth, I am had pressed to label Mr. Gore’s behavior as anything but hypocritical. He very simply does not walk his talk in any sense. It is my personal opinion that he has found a religious movement to attach himself, in the role of wealthy preacher in the grand cathedral. If you’re willing to give him a pass on his incredibly ostentatious and consumptive lifestyle, while he travels around the world promoting the curtailing of lifestyle enhancements for everyone else, might I suggest that there is another agenda involved? If you’re willing to defame our wonderful leaders in the name of comparison to Mr. Gore’s obvious and repeated hypocrisy, I am sorely disappointed.
Tracy, while I don’t know about these particular people, it is true that proponents of the environmental movement tend to be pro-abortion–just as those in the animal rights movement tend to be. To me it is the ultimate oddity. Or insanity.
[Note to Naismith: As the originator of the use of the word “insanity ” in the thread, I am employing this definition: extremely foolish; irrational or illogical]
I’m sorry that you attend a church that doesn’t allow agency. Perhaps you can convert to mine. 😉
Exactly. They do and we do.
adoration or devotion comparable to religious homage, shown toward a person; honor given to someone in recognition of their merit
We need no equivocation in this thread.
id say that defending a jerk like gore by taking down general authorities pretty much classifies as worship.
Allison I get it! You used equivocation to refute equivocation. I feel so smart!
Inconvenient truth for Al Gore as his North Pole sums don’t add up
Climategate heats up!
It’s not ridiculous at all. Al Gore buys them from himself and gets others to do it to. It’s brilliant. It’s a coup. I’m starting a new company this week!
Oh, you have GOT to read this, saw the link on Facebook:
A Tale of Two Houses – and Hypocrisy
Absolutely. But what’s sad is that the poor schleps who worship Gore are peddling around on their bikes in freezing rain and hand washing poopy baby wipe cloths in grey-water rain buckets. While Gore drinks cocktails on his private jet.
Gotta give it to Ed Bagley. Yes, environmentalism is his religion through and through. But at least he walks his talk! At least he has integrity!
I just saw this through the list on the side. Two y ears later and the same stupid stuff is still happening. Why aren’t these people accountable.?
