In my church, we are encouraged to fast for 24 hours once a month, generally on the first Sunday. This was our first fast Sunday since starting GNO (we fasted a week early last month due to a scheduled family event).
It's interesting to fast when you've come to think of being hungry as something to avoid. The FAQ gives directions on how to manage this:
Go ahead and fast, we suggest no more than 24 hours. When you decide to start eating again, start with these steps:
- Drink lots of water first.
- Eat some green veggies while you are cooking up your first meal (example: 1/2 cucumber).
- Eat a small/medium sized meal that is satisfying (example: week 4, meal 2).
- Continue to drink lots of water, dehydration is generally an issue with fasting.
- Wait about 1.5–1.75 hours before eating your next meal (example: 3 oz. cooked chicken, 4 oz sweet potato). Pick carbs that will stabilize your blood sugar well (examples: brown rice, oats, sweet potato, cream of wheat).
- Eat every 2–3 hours after but do not eat past 7:00–8:00 pm.
- Again, drink lots of water, but sip slowly!
Oh, down 4.5 pounds. Not as much as I'd hoped, but at least it's still going down a bit at a time.
