The first time was had a cell phone was in the very early 90s. We were heading off for a family vacation in Yellowstone and the Ocean Engineering Department didn't think they could risk being out of immediate contact with Sam. So they gave us another small suitcase to take…that housed a single phone.

During the entire trip we lugged that baby around and dutifully recharged it so that he would be available for consultation at a moment's notice.

Fortunately, technology advanced fairly quickly after that. We have run the gamut from big old, flip phones with antennas that poked you in the eye, to sleek little gadgets. We've had every major carrier: Verizon, Sprint, and AT&T.

Given a choice, we liked Sprint above all others. When Apple announced that they were finally going to offer Sprint for iPhones, we jumped at it, switching back from AT&T.

Sprint isn't perfect and, in fact, we had a little “issue” with customer service when we signed up. We had different stories from reps at two stores and two others from telephone representatives. And the print advertisements we were mailed were honored by some and not others. After many hours on the phone—and a few weeks of waiting—the issues were finally (mostly) solved to our satisfaction.

This doesn't sound like a minor issue. Unfortunately we've had many cell phones and many carriers and it always seems to be a big, stupid deal to get things right. Sprint, at least, came through eventually.
