Nice surprise today! Consumer Reports rated the 1 horse power Waste King Legend 8000 as the best garbage disposer on the market. With excellent ratings in speed, fineness of grind, and handling of vegetable scraps—and a good rating on noise—it outranked the other units tested. And it has a lifetime warranty, which is a great bonus

Unfortunately, the Waste King 8000 also has a hefty pricetag of $230. Because of the price, we decided to purchase the second-ranked Waste King Gourmet SS53300. It has only 3/4 horse power and a 10-year warranty—and didn't handle vegetable scraps as well—but the cost is much lower, at only $165. It was still a top-quality appliance and seemed like the perfect solution.

We need three garbage disposer units, two for the kitchen and one for the kitchenette. We found that it's much more convenient to spend a bit of extra money to have all the food prep sinks fitted with garbage disposers. Buying the slightly lower-ranked model would save us nearly $200.

While searching for the second-ranked model, however, I found the top-rated Waste King at Overstock for only $116! I snatched up three, getting the top-ranked unit for $147 less than the retail price of three second-ranked units.

As the name implies, Overstock doesn't have a regular inventory you can count on. But it's a great place to check when you're ready to buy. Sometimes you find just the right thing and the prices are always very competitive.
