We've all had disappointments and heartache. But it's easier to deal with when we can see a cause or when we are just experiencing a consequence of a stupid choice.
It's when we are blindsided by something out of our control or hurt by the evil of another or when the unfairness of life seems overwhelming that it can be hard to take. It's those times when we might feel like curling up in a ball and giving up.
But we can't. The unfairness of life impacts all of us and how we respond in those trying circumstances makes all the difference in the quality of life we will lead.
When you experience a huge set back, instead of giving in, try stepping up!
- Make a decision to bounce back
After a blow to our psyche, we often don't feel like moving forward. Instead of conceding defeat, make a conscious decision to come roaring back. - Take action on that decision
Decisions are the first step, but dreams don't become reality without action. Now that you've decided, it's time to do. - Focus on the future
Few people can get through life without regrets. But living in the past doesn't create a positive future. Look forward and dream big. - Close the past
We can't change the past, so living in the miserable parts of it just created misery in the present. Leave the pain, disappointment, sadness, and failure of the past behind you. Bring the good with you to the future. - Believe in yourself
Sometimes the hardest part about recovering from a setback is to realize that one setback doesn't predict a life of setbacks. Remember who you are. Think about your strengths. Move forward with faith.
In 1984, a good friend of mine used this line in a stage presentation:
If you never fall you're not setting your goals high enough. It's not how far you fall, but how high you bounce back after.
And I'm a bouncer.
I've remembered it ever since. Be a bouncer. Be the one who takes defeat and spins it on its head and comes flying back.
All experiences are relevant. You can learn something from everything you go through.
Learn the important lessons and move on. The future is bright!
