100 Day Challenge: Adapt to Circumstances

Practice what you preach. Do as you say. Walk the talk. Actions speak louder than words.

You've heard these things all your life because they are true.

Years ago I was struggling with my weight and brought it up in an online forum. A woman who lived close to me preceded to instruct me on how to get fit. This woman happened to be about 150 pounds overweight.

Now it's true that she may have been right. Lots of people have knowledge they don't act on. But even though she was a decent, kind, thoughtful person, she had zero credibility in the fitness department because either (a) her advice didn't work or (b) she didn't follow it herself.

Who you really are is defined by your behavior, not your words.

I'll say it again, by and large we do what we really want to do, we live as we really want to live, we are who we really want to be. This is true because it is our behaviors and choices that led us to where we are. If we had truly wanted something else, our choices would have been different.

Cognitive dissidence occurs when what we think and say don't align with what we do.

When you say you want to fit, but spend your evenings sitting on the couch eating chips, I'd say that what you really want is to be lazy and chow down on junk food. If you say you want to play the piano, but don't take lessons or practice, I'd say what you really want is to dream about playing the piano.

If you want to create the life of your dreams, your behavior must move you there. Wishing, hoping, dreaming, planning, pondering won't do it. Only action will get you there.

Is your current behavior taking you where you say you want to go? Make commitments to take action on your goals and keep them.
