A brand new home often calls for brand new furniture. Your new home will have it's own color palette, new room sizes and configurations, and different purposes. The furniture should match the new rooms.
Yesterday I had a couple of friends over and they asked where I got the latest additions to our slowly-but-surely-furnishing-the-home collection. I thought I'd share our finds with readers here. Our criteria in purchases is pretty simple:
- Quality construction
- Reasonable prices
- Pieces we love
There is lots of junk furniture out there. It looks acceptable to start with, but falls apart fast. That's a waste of money. But there is ample, well-made, sturdy furniture that can withstand many children for many years.
You'll also find lots of furniture that is highly overpriced. If you want to pay for a brand name to show off to your (silly) friends, there are lots of places to do it. I prefer to spend my money on just about anything else.
The hardest part of the equation, for me, is finding (and waiting to find) pieces we really love. It's easy to just buy a whole prepackaged room and be done with it. Not as easy to keep searching for something just right. Even though we ended up getting numerous pieces from the same sources, it was done at different times, in multiple trips, over the past year.
Now that most of the furniture is in place, here is a room-by-room rundown of what we got and where we got it.

Thanks Celestine. I’m not great at decorating, so it’s a bit stressful, but I think the results are coming out well. I just need to get my good friend over to help me add the finishing touches. 🙂
I love this post! It is so fun to look at each of the things and envision them all together in a room. How beautiful!
Those mattresses are a great price (in the kids’ rooms). Are they comfortable? Also, I didn’t know Home Depot had rugs. I would never have thought to look there.
Sarndee, we really like the mattresses so far. Because we had to buy so many — in the old house we had three twins and three kings, here all the kids have doubles — it was imperative that we get a quality mattress at a great price. These mattresses were a good deal, I bought on sale and bargained down a bit more due to the volume. And because of the platform beds we selected, we didn’t need box springs. (Box springs are such a racket!)
Our master mattress is a DREAM — we’ve have it for years and finally just refurbished it this past winter.)
Nice stuff. Do you have any tips on how to save money? I really need a new couch and a chair, but the budget it tight right now.
carrottop, I always compare prices in multiple venues online and offline. If I decided to buy online, I always look for a coupon. If I’m going to buy offline, I always ask for a discount or special of some kind.
Thanks for dropping by!
Hi Alison,
Would also like to ask which sofa do u think is better, a blue sofa or a white sofa is better fitting for a black wall in the living room

Eric, my suggestion is no black wall! I love paint, but black? No!
Some great furniture at very reasonable prices. I love the King Size bed, once you have slept in one you will never change
In my kid room I want to get a round shaped ottoman to put the toys inside. Also because it has no corners it is safe for children.

Make home beautiful by decorating it by using stylish furniture that would available in budget. Old furniture can be altered to make stylish and trendy.
Furniture is always really important to a home, but another thing that is really important is carpet. A good carpet store can make all the difference in your home.
i also learned the hard way that you should always buy the pair if you find a great piece of furniture
