What are Your Goals for 2012?

I have — quite bravely, I think — posted my New Year’s resolutions for 2012 for the world to see. No, it doesn’t magically complete them, but the sense of accountability is certainly stronger when everyone knows what you intend to do.

What are your goals for 2012? Share them here and let’s support each other in making this a year to remember!

    Alison, I LOVE the way you chose different aspects of life and set a goal in each one. I always choose 2 goals– one temporal and one spiritual. But I like the way you specified different areas– mind, body, spirit–even things for your home, for fun, etc. My Relief Society president printed out goal planning sheets for us– and doggone it, I forgot to grab one as I was heading out the RS door. I’m thinking I’ll do a search online and see if I can find one. This woud make a good FHE for next week for the whole family!

    partone – too funny!!!!! If I hadn’t read your post first, I would have missed that that goal was under ‘for love’ and just thought ‘good idea, I should do that too.

    Alison – I am tired just reading your goals! We need to do this as well. Only two of my kids are currently at home (other two are visiting Grandma), but we might try this for a FHA(fternoon) today. I need to set goals, but I have to think small:

    **consistent personal worship
    **clean (and maintain) my bedroom

    My problem with goals is that I tend to set too many, and then my focus is gone and I am running off in 20 directions! Even now, I am thinking I should also set a goal to declutter the whole house, paint the whole interior of our house, apply for grad school, be nice to people who irritate me, make a strict budget, increase our savings account, re-do our chore chart. .. then it becomes a to do list rather than a real, measurable goal that I can use to improve myself over the course of my life. What I hope for the two goals that I did write down is that when I do these two things over the course of a year, they will become so ingrained, that they will continue to be consistent after the end of 2012 and I can set new goals for 2013, without losing what I learned in 2012.

    My goal is to be vertical at the end of 2012. Baby steps. 🙂

    partone, funny. The reason that’s under “for Love” is because it’s absolutely for my husband. I even made a card and wrapped it and gave it to him for Christmas. I am a night owl. Have been since birth (ask my parents!). Baby, toddler, teen, adult. Can’t go to sleep until the wee hours. And my husband is a morning person. I am making (another) attempt to retrain my body clock to be more normal. For Sam. 🙂

    I have never made a New Year’s resolution. It seems that I am always working on something, so making goals at the beginning of the year seems very artificial to me.

    But FWIW, Cricket will celebrate his 4th birthday in February, and I still have not lost the weight I gained when I was pregnant. I started to do it last year, and then I injured myself when I pushed myself too hard, too fast when exercising. So I stopped exercising back in August and have gained back the few pounds I lost. Now I think I am all healed up and I need to get back into both exercising and keeping track of what I eat.

    Tracy, I understand your sentiment and agree. There is no reason to specify goals to be set only on New Year’s Day by any means. I set initial goals every year and, once accomplished, try to add another to that “area of focus.” So my goals are ongoing, too. That said, a New Year’s resolution is no more “artificial” than a resolution any other day.

    My experience working with people in workshops, etc., has been that those who consciously set goals (on whatever time scale) accomplish far more than those who don’t. And I don’t mean spinning wheels wildly, I mean actually working toward the kind of life they want to have. Otherwise, we tend to go with what is easy or what sounds fun or what presents itself, rather than what would help us reach our potential.
