Spring Hunger Gap

This post brought to you by The Walmart Foundation. All opinions are 100% mine.

Inbox (16 messages, 1 unread).jpgEveryone thinks about giving at Christmas. Charitable organizations get donations, nursing homes are booked, cookies are delivered.

But then we get back to our “real” lives and forget that spirit of giving. nbsp;At this time of year, food bank resources tend to deplete.

Unemployment is one of the main causes of hunger. And with the supposed financial recovery no where in sight, the need is greater than ever.

To help bridge the “spring hunger gap,” the Walmart has teamed with Feeding America, ConAgra, General Mills, Kraft, and Kellogg’s in the Fighting Hunger Together initiative.

Vote to fight spring hunger with Walmart by going to their Facebook site between April 9 and 30. You can vote between the 200 communities with the highest unemployment rates (as determined by the Department of Labor). Walmart will donate $2 million to the 21 communities who get the most votes.

Last year, my home state capital was the big winner, with Salt Lake City taking the $1,000,000 jackpot. And another Utah city, Ogden, got a consolation prize of $100,000. It was a huge boon to the food banks in the area.

Hop over to their Facebook page and vote. And go to your local Walmart during the same time period. Look for the promotions that will tell you which products qualify as donations for Feeding America or Action for Healthy Kids.

This year, St. George, Utah, is on the list, with an unemployment rate of 10.1%. They will be getting my vote.

Which city are you cheering for?
