When I was pregnant with Samson in 2000, I got a call from my friend. Apparently she knew that I was a tad anal retentive about organizing when I was pregnant. (Call it the nesting instinct on crack.)
“Hi, Alison. This is Kendra. What are you doing right this second. Don’t lie to me!”
“I’m…alphabetizing the spice cupboard.”
It’s true. To this day, my spice cupboard has been alphabetized. I transfer the spices from the containers — that are all sorts of sizes — into small, uniform, plastic containers (I use the Tupperware modular mates spice set), label them (with my Dymo label maker), and put them on tiered shelves in alphabetical order. Go ahead and mock. But when anyone needs to find a spice, it’s quick and easy, and I can always see exactly how much I have. The cabinet looks fabulous, to boot.
Instead of dealing with a jumble of spices, make a small investment in a spice rack. There are so many to choose from that will fit your style and needs. And they will save space and hassle.
Some of my favorite kitchen spice racks (besides my own system) include:
- Wine rack style spice racks — glass jars that slide into a stainless steel rack system
- Rectangular glass rack — modern shaker jars with stainless steel lids that sit in a wall-mounted steel bracket
- Dial measured carousel — spinning stainless steel storage that pours out measured amounts of spices based on dial setting
There are hundreds of styles of spice racks to match your decor and suit your cooking style. Their are racks for counters, walls, cabinets, and drawers — and they come in metals, plastic, wood, etc. (You can tell I have a penchant for stainless steel!) Get your spices organized and you, too, can be the neighborhood laughing stock.
