Selecting and purchasing the lighting for an entire home is a major undertaking. There are tens of thousands of styles, dozens of finishes, myriad brands, and more varieties of bulbs than I can count. Wading through them all to find the ones that you want to live with for years and years can take lots of time.
In my search for the perfect light fixtures, I've found some very good lighting sources online. They beat browsing through catalogs hands down. Catalogs are produced by manufacturers. General lighting websites, however, allow you to filter by type (chandeliers, sconces, pendants, flush mounts, lamps, etc.), by finish (brushed nickel, rubbed bronze, chrome, copper, brass, etc. (please, tell me you don't really want brass!)), by price, by size, by color, by type of glass, by number of lights and tiers, by brand, and more. It's easy to filter the searches to meet your needs and to hone in on the fixtures that fit your style.
Best of all, the prices cannot be beat. Lighting stores offer some discounts to contractors and electricians. Sometimes they will agree to give homeowners a discount as well. But I have found their selections to be mostly higher end and close to retail. You can easily compare the prices between the various discount home lighting sites and get some amazing bargains.
