Ready for Cabinet Bids

Note: The cabinet drawings have been updated. The kitchen has been modified and the master bath vanity drawing is now complete. 5/5/10

Shaker Cherry CabinetsJust a quick heads up to all you carpenters and cabinet makers! We are going to be getting bids on all the cabinets and built-ins in our new home.

We are looking for quality craftsmanship and reliable, honest people. We had two bad experiences with cabinet makers in our last build. We learned the hard way and expect professionalism this time around. If you’re interested, please read the provided information carefully.

We’d like the bid to include a per room cost. I’ve included all the rooms that we hope to include, but we will complete only those that fit in the budget. Some of our plans may have to wait until later. We need to be able to assess the cost of each room individually.

Please download the detailed cabinet information and the full set of rough drawings below. The notes have specifics for every room. Feel free to contact me with any questions.

We are looking for

  • Frameless cabinetry
  • Natural cherry in main rooms
  • Anything durable in garage
  • White (if less expensive) elsewhere
  • Flat-panel shaker style cabinet doors
  • Plain drawers

We have a few special features, like pull-out stool drawers under bathroom/kitchen sinks, table cloth hanging rods, etc.

We have previously posted about the main cabinet features that are important to us. Please look that over carefully. Suggestions are appreciated.

If you’re interested in bidding on the cabinets, please either use the contact form or comment below.

Just wanted to send a word of warning, some cabinet companies do really shoddy work and charge high. Make sure you get referrals and follow them up!

Candice, absolutely. We’ve “been there, done that” more than once. This time we’re going to be picky!

Thanks for contacting us. We look forward to bidding on your cabinets and I have downloaded the drawings that you have provided. Is there a way to get a general floorplan, or is there a link that you have provided, but I am not seeing? I look forward to hearing from you

We don’t like MDF. But after much discussion with a variety of cabinet makers we are resigned to using it since pretty much everyone does. However, with others’ expertise we’ve come to figure out a way to avoid some of the worst MDF issues.

To avoid the swelling that is an issue with water contact, we want to use plywood on all sink cabinets and also on the dishwasher surrounds. We will also use this on the storage tower next to the boys’ bathtub.

To avoid the chipping that occurs on adjustable MDF shelving, we’ll also use plywood for the library shelves.
