Join Me for Better Sleep Month

Better Sleep MonthI’ve shared my sleep woes with you in the past — including my efforts to sleep like a normal person. I’ve had trouble sleeping since I was a baby. That is no hyperbole. And I’ve tried every holistic and non-holistic solution I’ve ever heard of. I’ve tried light therapy, aromatherapy, sleep masks, white noise, wave sounds, warm baths, and warm milk. But nothing has worked. Nothing.

In fact, this very morning I went to bed at 4:30 am — even though I had to get up at 7:00 am.

Here’s the thing. I’m still functional, but I’m not my best. I’m sluggish and unmotivated and just worn out. (Until about 9:00 am when my awake button magically comes on and makes me want to go out to party. Even though I’m staring down on my 50th birthday. Makes no sense all.

Mostly, it’s frustrating to be unable to get on a normal schedule.

Given that May is Better Sleep Month, I’m ready to join the Better Sleep Council’s Get on Top campaign to finally get on top of my sleep problems so I can move forward toward better heath and happiness. To start, I’m using a guide for how to get better sleep, which covers all sorts of sleep statistics, positions, and all kinds of advice.

I love the mattress we have, at least in theory. It’s the perfect combination to feel mighty comfortable, but it’s now — dare I say it — 17 years old. It’s been refurbished by the manufacturer once and I turn the mattress occassionally and vacuum it, but I have no idea if that’s too old to serve it’s intended purpose. It’s time I learn how to judge a matress and, if needed, how to buy a mattress.

If your waking up with aches and pains — or you just found out the matress at the Hilton gives you the best night’s sleep anywhere — and need a matress, too, this Memorial Day is a perfect time. Furniture stores always hold sales over federal holidays. (My favorite, RC Willey, makes a big deal out of the day off to get you in to buy more stuff!)

While you’re at it, join the Better Sleep Council’s Get on Top, win $1,000 giveaway and a chance to win a $50 gift card. (Here are the official rules for the giveaway.) If you are 18 or older and living in the US, just comment on the post between May 1 and May 30. Let me know your sleeping troubles and how a new mattress would help. One of my readers will win a $50 (USD) VISA gift card!

I’ll be looking at my mattress needs and will keep you posted on my progress.

Do you sleep well? What are your tricks?

My mattress is so lumpy I can never get comfortable. A new mattress would definitely help me sleep better and feel more energetic during the day!

I toss and turn all night long from back/hip aches, I’ve even tried the pillow between the legs and doesn’t help lol totally putting a fund together to save up for a new mattress! I think having a new and better mattress would support my body better!

I have trouble sleeping due to back pain and our old mattress makes the problem worse. I could use some nice mattress.

I have a lot of back pain, I think a new mattress would help.

I have scoliosis which causes a lot of back pain daily in my lower back as well as the middle/center where your spine is and also between my shoulders where your neck meets your back – it’s awful. This is why I rarely sleep on my back. I am always forced to sleep on my side or my stomach because my current, older mattress is just not cushioned enough for my back – it’s painful and uncomfortable. I really do need a new mattress, one that is very soft and has a lot of cushion. I think that would help a lot.

My mattress is pretty old – at least 10 years and definitely leaves a lot to be desired. On one side I can actually feel the springs in my back so a new mattress would definitely aid with better sleep and overall better health.

My mattress is a little bit old and not as cushioned as I would like it to be, it causes me discomfort when I sleep and sometimes I wake up sore. Choosing a new mattress with the right cushion and support would definitely help me sleep better.

My mattress is very lumpy and uneven and not very comfortable. I get up usually at least once during the night and I think a newer, better mattress would result in an overall better sleep experience.

No, I’m sad (and sleepy) to say that I don’t…ever! My mattress is very old and very hard with a dip in the middle despite regular flipping. Thanks to Lupus, Fibro, joint issues, etc. it is impossible for me to get comfy enough to go to sleep. I use a lot of pillows to try and prop myself, but I think a new foam or gel top mattress is the only answer to being able to get some sleep!

I have the worst sleep ever. It gets so bad I’ll lay there and think, okay if I go to sleep right now, I’ll get 3 hours and then 2 hours and you get it. I have my mattress from my 1 marriage that was stored in a extra room in my bsmt. Because my 2nd husband took our newly purchased bedroom set, with him , when he left me for a youngster 20 years younger then me. So that may or may not have something to do with it. I would love a new bed, that me and only me has slept on. No ex ghosts.

A new mattress would help back problems so I would feel rested in the morning. Thanks for the opportunity.

My husband gets up numerous times every night (and wakes me up often doing so) and constantly complains about needing a new mattress because it’s not cushioned enough and very uneven. Our mattress is easily over 15 years old and a new mattress would let him (and me) get a better sleep!

A new mattress would be a big help in letting be feel more comfortable when I go to sleep. I toss and turn a lot trying to get comfortable on my mattress.
